So I watched the Avengers movie today, and while it was SO CLOSE TO PERFECT, I was just wondering if anyone had noticed anything a bit dodgy about Maria Hill?

I mean, I know she’s a minor character, but from the comics and the Avengers cartoon, I’ve always kind of got the…

They made her brown for the cartoon. I’m pretty sure she’s been consistently depicted as white in the comic books, I could be wrong though.

It goes back to the somewhat American-centric idea that “Her name is Maria, so she can’t be white!” when there are a lot of people with Spanish names and surnames who would technically be classified as white.

I’m not sure what race she’s meant to be in the comics because she always looks different depending on the artist (not just skin tone either, her face even looks different) but yeah the cartoon Maria Hill looks nothing like the comic version of her anyway. In the comics, we barely know anything about Maria at all, iirc; I think they mentioned her family like once? And I can’t even remember what they said. Does anyone remember more? Because I always thought she was white as well, but maybe I just missed something. 

Somehow whenever I reply to a conversation, the words always disappear.  

Maria’s mother died in childbirth.  Her father blamed and abused her.  She joined the Marines and went to SHIELD from there.  She seems to have built up her stoicness over time.  And has roughly one page of back story.

I likewise always thought she was white, but comic artists do tend to fail at portraying non-white features, so who can really say without covering her back story more?
